seven wonders

In one of those (all too few) fortunate accidents of television viewing this evening I lucked across The Seven Wonders of the Industrial World on Prime.

This week’s episode, apparently the first, showed how Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the 1850s built the Great Eastern, a ship of revolutionary design and immense size. It dramatised the building process by using actors emulating the “fly on the wall” style documentary programming… which in this context may sound cheesy, but actually works really well. Next week: the sewers of London. Yes, really. And I’m looking forward to it.

Those crazy Victorians, eh?! They’ve left us many marvels of engineering. One of my all time favourites is the Forth Rail Bridge, in Scotland. I had a total nerd thrill (possibly even a retro nerdgasm) the day Becky and I went across it on our train trip to Inverness a few years back. And on a smaller scale, folk engineering almost, there’s always the lobster pond.
