pigeon in the cherry treeThe rather unimpressive photo is of a native woodpigeon, the kererū, sitting in our cherry tree. I was only about 10 metres away, honest! Oh for a camera with a zoom lens…

The pigeons are apparently not overly common in Wellington (the census of species at the nearby Karori Wildlife Sanctuary records them as a “rare visitor”). Hopefully this one will be back to get at the cherries before the blackbirds finish them off. The blackbirds have started to strip the tree even though the cherries are not completely ripe. And then of course, they’ll take a big dump as they fly off and leave a lovely purple spatter on someone’s washing…
